Company deep dive
Palantir Forward Deployed Engineer
Palantir invented the Forward Deployed Engineer role in the mid-2000s. Every AI company hiring FDEs today is copying the Palantir playbook. Here is what the job actually is, what the interview tests, and what it pays.
What the role is
A Palantir FDE (also called FDSE, Forward Deployed Software Engineer) is embedded with a single customer, typically a Fortune 500 enterprise or a government agency. You use Palantir Foundry or Gotham to deliver a working solution against the customer's real data. You own the outcome, not the codebase.
Two flavors:
- Commercial FDE: Foundry, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, banking.
- USG FDE: Gotham, defense and intelligence, often cleared work.
Interview loop
- Recruiter screen · motivation, travel comfort, clearance eligibility.
- Technical phone screen · Python, data structures, SQL. Bar is closer to product-eng than SRE.
- Take-home or coding pair · a small data pipeline problem.
- Onsite (virtual or in-person) · 4 to 5 rounds mixing coding, system design, and a heavy behavioral loop focused on ambiguity, client posture, and ownership.
- Team match · you interview with 2 or 3 teams and pick a fit.
The behavioral rounds are the differentiator. Palantir tests for people who can walk into a bank on Monday, ask the right question by Wednesday, and demo something real on Friday.
Salary
Palantir FDE total compensation typically lands between $180K (new grad) and $320K (senior), heavily weighted toward RSU. Base is conservative for the industry. Full breakdown by level lives on the salary page.
