What drives the spread
- Equity liquidity. OpenAI PPUs and Anthropic RSUs price above Palantir RSU at grant. Half of FDE comp at frontier labs is the equity story.
- Client tier. FDEs on Fortune 50 or government accounts get retention grants faster.
- Travel. 40%+ travel roles typically add $30K – $60K.
- Clearance. TS/SCI adds roughly $40K to base at defense-adjacent employers.
- Depth. FDEs who own delivery end-to-end promote faster than pure solutions engineers.
How to negotiate as an FDE
- Anchor on total comp, not base. Every top employer expects equity conversation.
- Ask for a sign-on to bridge unvested equity. FDE candidates usually leave money on the table.
- Negotiate travel policy in writing, not just cash. Per-diem, class, and cadence matter over four years.
- Get the promotion window in writing. FDE ladders are shorter than product-eng ladders at most employers.
